Gardening and Developing More Food Security

Gardening can be a great way to add to your food source and can be extremely rewarding in seeing your hard work in planting seeds and plants come to fruition in a bountiful display of vegetables all summer long. In addition, the use of herbs can help add lots of flavor while supporting a healthier diet with less sodium and promote the many benefits of using herbs to season and flavor many dishes.
Need to get seeds: High Mowing Seeds donate packets of vegetable and herb seeds to local libraries. Check your local library for seed packets.

Not much space: try container gardening. Container gardening can help you grow your salad essentials with space saving cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, and salad greens. Also, try growing some herbs while you are at it. Herbs make great additions to many dishes, and there is something aromatic about growing fresh basil, oregano, cilantro, and other herbs. Yum!

No space or time to garden. Not to worry. Try supporting your local farms by applying for a vegetable share through the Community Supported Agriculure (CSA) through the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA-VT).  Check the NOFA-VT website to see if you meet income guidelines and for application deadlines. When you apply for a supported CSA share through NOFA-VT, you pay half the cost of the share and help support your local farmer.
